چکیده

AIM The aim of this study was to determine the frequency of two important pathogenic microorganisms associated with endodontic infections, Enterococcus faecalis and Candida albicans, in root canal samples from patients with necrotic pulps or failed canal therapy by polymerase chain reaction method. METHOD Microbial samples were obtained from 117 teeth with necrotic pulp tissues and 114 teeth with failed endodontic treatment. RESULTS E.faecalis were identified in 16% of the necrotic and 10% of the retreated root canal infections by PCR. C.albicans genome were identified in 20% and 11% of the necrotic and retreated root canal infections, respectively, by PCR. The frequencies of microbiota were not statistically different between necrotic and retreatment groups (p > 0.05, chi squared test). CONCLUSIONS PCR analysis of teeth with periapical lesions revealed that E.faecalis was found in fewer patients than in previous studies. The C.albicans prevelance was consistent with previous reports. No statistical difference was found between primary and secondary root canal infections for C.albicans or E.faecalis. Key words:Primary root canal infection, secondary root canal infection, E.faecalis, C.albicans.

Enterococcus spp. isolated from root canals with persistent chronic apical periodontitis in a Chilean population

Aim: To isolate and identify in a Chilean population, Enterococcus spp. from root canals with persistent chronic apical periodontitis (CAP) and to investigate the potential correlation between the bacteria and the observed clinical features. Methods: Twenty patients with indication for endodontic retreatment due to persistent CAP were selected. Data from patient general health and dental clinic...

Recovery of Enterococcus faecalis in root canal lumen of patients with primary and secondary endodontic lesions.

The presence of Enterococcus faecalis in root canal teeth affected by primary and secondary periapical lesions was studied using polymerase chain reaction (PCR) assays. The association between presence of E. faecalis with clinical signs of apical lesions was assessed to evaluate a possible relationship between clinical findings. Microbial samples were obtained from healthy patients affected by ...

Evaluation of Antimicrobial and Antifungal Efficacy of Inter Appointment Intracanal Medicaments against Enterococcus and Candida albicans: An In Vitro Study

BACKGROUND Microorganisms and their by-products in pulpal and periapical diseases are to be considered as the primary etiological agents of the pulpal necrosis and apical periodontitis. Enterococcus faecalis, which is the most common organism isolated from failed root canals, is a Gram-positive facultative anaerobe. Yeasts can be detected in 7-18% of infected root canals. MATERIALS AND METHOD...

The Use of Different Irrigation Techniques to Decrease Bacterial Loads in Healthy and Diabetic Patients with Asymptomatic Apical Periodontitis

BACKGROUND Diabetes mellitus is a multisystem disease which weakens the human's immunity. Subsequently, it worsens the sequelae of apical periodontitis by raising a fierce bacterial trait due to the impaired host response. AIM This study aimed to estimate bacterial reduction after using different irrigation techniques in systemically healthy and diabetic patients with asymptomatic apical peri...
